How to Take Care of Your Dental Fillings

Composite restorations, or tooth-colored fillings, are used to fill cavities and prevent further tooth decay or damage. Today’s composite fillings are stronger, more durable than ever before and can last years. However, exactly how long they last ultimately depends on each patient’s oral hygiene and care. In this blog post, Longmont cosmetic dentist Dr. Amy Farmer, shares helpful tips with dental patients on how to properly care for dental fillings to ensure they last for as long as possible.

Dental Filling Aftercare

Once a dental filling is placed, it is important to take certain steps to prevent decay from forming under or around the filling or in other teeth. Essentially, you should treat dental fillings as you would your natural teeth. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing at least once a day can keep your teeth, including your fillings, strong and healthy. Eating a well-balanced diet and limiting your intake of sugary foods and drinks can also prevent further tooth damage and decay.

With composite fillings, you can eat and chew as normal. However, it is a good idea to avoid or limit hard-to-eat foods (e.g., apples and hard candy) as they can put stress on your fillings and teeth. Avoid biting into hard objects such as fingernails, bottle caps and pens. Liquids like coffee, tea and red wine should also be avoided as they can stain both your natural teeth and fillings.

Regular Dental Checkups in Longmont

Regular dental checkups and cleanings are also important. It is recommended you visit your dentist every six months. During your visit, your dentist will examine your fillings to see if they are healthy and functional. If your filling is cracked or leaking, your dentist will need to replace the filling. Schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately if:

  • You experience tooth sensitivity
  • You see a crack on a filling
  • Part of a filling appears to be missing
