Six Ways To Get The Most from Your Clear Aligner Treatment

Clear aligners are designed to straighten your smile with minimal disruptions to your everyday life. You can remove them, eat your favorite foods, take photos, or clean your teeth with minimal interruptions. But that freedom comes with responsibility. The success of your treatment depends on consistency and following your dentist’s instructions. At Crossroads Dental in Longmont, Colorado, we share a few tips to make your journey with clear aligners smooth and satisfactory.

1. Wear your aligners as directed

Your aligners only work when in the mouth. Wear them for at least 20-22 hours daily. Removing them too often or leaving them out for extended periods can delay treatment and extend your timeline. To ensure you remain consistent with wearing aligners, use aligner tracking apps and schedule meals to avoid frequent removal. Also, reduce snacks as much as possible. Think of your aligners as working around the clock. The more consistently you wear them, the more predictable your results will be.

2. Switch your aligners as directed

Each aligner is a part of a step-by-step plan. Your dentist will recommend switching your aligners every 7-10 days. Some individuals switch the aligners too soon or too late. Unfortunately, this can lead to undesirable results. Always switch to a new set of aligners as directed by your dentist. Safe progress is faster than rushed mistakes.

3. Keep your aligners clean

Clean aligners not only look better but also help maintain good oral health. Follow these tips to keep your clear aligners clean and healthy.

  • Rinse your trays whenever you remove them
  • Clean your aligners with a soft brush and mild soap solution (not toothpaste)
  • Avoid using hot water
  • Keep the aligner case clean and dry

Dirty or damaged aligners can reduce the effectiveness of your treatment. Small maintenance steps help keep your treatment on track.

4. Practice excellent oral hygiene

Every time you place your aligners in your mouth, you create a snug environment around your teeth. If food particles or plaque are trapped underneath, they can increase the risk of cavities and gum problems.

Important rules:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal
  • Floss daily
  • Use a medicated mouthwash

Healthy teeth respond better to orthodontic treatment. It also minimizes the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, which can delay your treatment progress.

5. Protect your aligners from damage or loss

Putting your aligners in napkins, pockets, or bags is a quick way to damage or lose them. Always store your aligners in the provided case when not in your mouth. It’s one of the most overlooked instructions, which often leads to costly replacements or delays.

Pro tip: Accidents happen, and losing or damaging an aligner is more common than you might think. If it happens, contact our office as soon as possible. We’ll evaluate your progress and recommend the best next step to keep your treatment on track. Typically, this may mean wearing your previous aligner, moving to the next one in the series, or ordering a replacement. Acting quickly can help prevent unnecessary delays in your smile journey.

6. Don’t skip check-in appointments

Your dentist will schedule regular appointments, typically every 6-8 weeks. During these check-ups, we assess your progress, answer your questions, and give you a new set of aligners. You can also mention any concerns, such as discomfort or poorly fitting aligners. Don’t skip these check-ups, as they help ensure your treatment progresses as planned.
